MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES 鈥 The pageantry of the 43rd Annual MSU Billings Powwow will commence Friday, April 8, 2011 at 6pm. Tribes from around Montana will gather at Alterowitz Gymnasium to join in dancing, singing, and visiting while renewing old friendships and making new ones. General admission price is $10 for anyone age 5 to 65. The cost for dancers and individuals over 65 years of age is $5.
Powwows across the country strive to renew the culture and preserve the rich heritage
of American Indians, said Reno Charette, Director of American Indian Outreach at MSU
Billings. Charette went on to say the powwow will give the University a stage to
launch an endowed scholarship campaign titled, 鈥淓ducation is Our New Buffalo.鈥 Donating
to this campaign will aid American Indian students who want to attend college at MSUB.
Individuals and organizations can make contributions to the funding of the scholarship
by contacting the MSUB Foundation at 657-2244. In addition to a direct contribution,
all proceeds from the purchase of a powwow program, calendar, tee shirt, 50/50 ticket,
or raffle ticket during the event will go towards funding the scholarship. The Northern
Cheyenne Tribal Council has also joined the cause by donating a once in a lifetime
buffalo hunt on tribal land. Tickets will be sold for $5 with the winner being announced
at 鈥淐row Fair鈥 on August 22, 2011. Their generous gift honors us and the students
we serve, said Charette. With the support of the tribes behind us we are confident
that our efforts to increase opportunities for Indian students at MSUB will be successful. For more information visitwww.msubillings.edu/powwow.
