Degree Requirements

The University Honors Program (UHP) offers transcript designations and an academic
minor to students who complete the respective requirements.
Please review the requirements that apply to your academic plan.
Requirements for Students Entering the UHP in Fall 2024 or Later
University Honors Distinction (Transcript Designation Only)
- Completion of 15 Honors credits
- Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 in Honors courses
- No portfolio required
Interdisciplinary Honors Minor
- Completion of 21 Honors credits, including:
- HONR 111 or HONR 311
- HONR 205 Honors Inquiry and Research
- HONR 499 Honors Capstone or approved departmental capstone
- One upper-division Honors seminar or elective outside of the student鈥檚 major
- 9 additional elective Honors credits
- At least 9 credits must be at the 300-level or above
- Portfolio required, compiled with a faculty advisor, and typically includes:
- Samples of coursework
- Brief essay reflecting on how the work contributed to academic and professional development
Capstone Substitution
If students complete a departmental capstone in place of HONR 499, the course must
include:
- Original research or creative scholarship
- Written interpretation or analysis
- Public presentation or defense
Requirements for Students Who Entered the UHP Before Fall 2024
University Honors Scholar
- Completion of 21 Honors credits
- Must include HONR 111 and HONR 499 or an approved departmental capstone
- At least 9 of the 21 credits must be at the 300-level or above
- Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
- If a departmental capstone is used in place of HONR 499, it must include:
- Original research or creative scholarship
- Written interpretation or analysis
- Public presentation or defense
University Honors Graduate
- For students who entered the UHP with 45 or more college credits
- Completion of 15 Honors credits, including HONR 499 or an approved departmental capstone
- At least 9 of the 15 credits must be at the 300-level or above
- Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
- Departmental capstone must include:
- Original research or creative scholarship
- Written interpretation or analysis
- Public presentation or defense
Interdisciplinary Honors Minor (For Continuing Students)
- Completion of the University Honors Scholar requirements
- Portfolio required, including samples of student work and a reflective essay on how the work aligns with the goals of the University Honors Program
Note:
Honors courses may include approved general education courses, departmental seminars,
special topic seminars, internships, Honors contracts, and independent study.
